WHEATON, Md. – Montgomery Parks is proud to announce that its Oakley Cabin Augmented Reality (AR) experience is being acknowledged for Excellence in Preservation Partnerships by the Maryland Historical Trust.

Montgomery Parks partnered with Montgomery County Technology and Enterprise Business Solutions (TEBS), and the University of Maryland Historic Preservation Program (UMD) to create the AR experience at Oakley Cabin.

Oakley Cabin African American Museum and Park is a living history museum on Brookeville Road in Olney that interprets the stories of this rural roadside community in the 19th and 20th centuries. The cabin is one of three originally built during the 19th century and may have been home to enslaved laborers from the surrounding Oakley Farm. After Emancipation, it became the center of a community of free Black families who worked mostly as farm laborers, laundresses, and tradespeople.

The AR experience enables Oakley Cabin visitors to use a mobile device to scan QR codes that provide audio narratives with details about the community and virtual renderings of the Oakley Cabin interior and surrounding grounds. Visitors can also use their phones to interact with 3-D models and objects that would have historically been found at the site. The AR experience is available in seven languages and open year-round to visitors.

“The partnership between our three organizations harnesses technology to enrich the public’s understanding of history,” said Cassandra Michaud, Montgomery Parks cultural resources stewardship supervisor. “We plan to develop future projects that serve to document these critical histories and expand public access to cultural heritage.”

“The Oakley Cabin AR Experience is a culmination of years of cross-agency partnerships,” said Mitsuko R. Herrera, program director of XR Montgomery, Montgomery County’s extended reality program.  “TEBS learned about Oakley Cabin through a 2020 multi-agency event sponsored by Montgomery Parks, and we’ve been engaged with UMD since 2018.  When the right opportunity presented itself, we were able to leverage those relationships, and we envision building more experiences as funding and resources become available to expand economic heritage tourism projects and youth education engagement.”

Each partner involved in developing the AR experience played a unique role. Montgomery Parks stewards the historic site, contributing interpretations based on years of historical and archaeological research, Montgomery County TEBS oversaw the technology and integration of data into an AR format, as well as providing translation services, and the UMD Historic Preservation Program team brought the high level of documentation through laser scanning and 3-D modeling that is foundational to the project

“The Historic Preservation Program at the University of Maryland has been investing in state-of-the-art technologies to produce digital twins of historic sites for over a decade. This partnership provided an excellent opportunity to serve the community and demonstrate the capacity of these tools for documentation and interpretation, expanding access to deeper understandings of the histories that made our communities.” Stefan Woehlke, Assistant Clinical Professor at UMD.

“We’ve taken a historic site like Oakley Cabin and made it more accessible to people by using modern tools that help bring the past to life,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “Oakley Cabin tells a story that needs to be remembered. It’s part of the history of African American life in Montgomery County, and we have a responsibility to make sure that history is preserved and shared. Using technology to expand access to these stories is one way we can reach more people. This project does exactly that, it blends education, equity, and technology in a way that reflects the values of our County. I applaud the efforts of TEBS, Montgomery Parks, and the University of Maryland to make this happen.”

The AR experience complements live interpretive programming already taking place at Oakley Cabin. Docent-led tours offer the public and school groups a look at the culture and traditions of the Oakley community, which heavily influenced its surrounding communities. Oakley Cabin is open the second and fourth Saturdays of the month from April through October.

Call to Artists: Public mural commission at Glenmont Local Park

WHEATON, Md. – Montgomery Parks and the Montgomery Parks Foundation invite local artists from Maryland and Washington D.C. to submit applications for a public art mural commission on the south façade of the Glenmont Local Park Activity Building in Glenmont. The project will transform a prominent public-facing wall into a vibrant work of art that reflects the character, culture, and creativity of the surrounding community.  The deadline for artists applications is May 30, 2025, by 5 p.m.

Located in the 3200 block of Randolph Road, the Glenmont Local Park Activity Building is one of 19 park activity buildings in Montgomery Parks system. The building—constructed in 1954 and renovated in 2018—is a mid-century modern structure that serves as a vital hub for community events. The south-facing wall that once contained a large picture window now presents a 575-square-foot blank canvas highly visible from Randolph Road. Artists are encouraged to visit the site before applying.

This mural project is made possible by a generous grant from the Montgomery Parks Foundation and offers a unique opportunity to create lasting public artwork that emphasizes a sense of place, engages residents, and enhances neighborhood identity. The mural should:

  • Boost the identity and visual appeal of Glenmont Local Park
  • Reflect the community’s values, history, and cultural diversity
  • Draw from prior community feedback
  • Be durable, low-maintenance, and appropriate for long-term display

“We’re excited to invite local artists to help us elevate the experience of Glenmont Local Park visitors through the transformative power of public art,” said Katie Rictor, executive director of the Montgomery Parks Foundation. “This mural will become a visual landmark and a source of inspiration for all who pass by.”

Artist selection process

An artist selection panel will review applicants’ qualifications and narrow the pool to no more than five artists or artist teams.

  • The finalists will prepare site-specific design proposals for a public vote.
  • Each of the finalists will receive a $1,000 honorarium for costs associated with creating a concept design.
  • The artist of the winning concept will be awarded up to $30,000 for the final design, creation, and installation of the artwork to be completed by November 14, 2025.

“Bottleworks Lane Urban Park references the park’s industrial roots while honoring the former Coca-Cola Bottling Works plant on the site and the nearby former Canada Dry Bottling Works plant,” said Henry Coppola, Montgomery Parks long range planning supervisor for the Park Planning and Stewardship Division.

The one-acre, newly named Bottleworks Lane Urban Park will serve as an active, urban, recreational space featuring a promenade, a playground, a fitness area, a multi-sport court, a dog run, and a picnic area, among other amenities.

Agency vies for its seventh Gold Medal Award against three other agencies.

RIVERDALE, Md. – The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) has been selected as a finalist in the 2025 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration (AAPRA) in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA).

The Gold Medal is among the highest honors in the parks and recreation industry, recognizing outstanding management and service. M-NCPPC, which includes the Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County, and Montgomery Parks, is the only six-time national Gold Medal winner for excellence in parks and recreation management in the nation. The agency earned this prestigious award in 1973, 1977, 1983, 1984, 2003, and 2015 and was also named a finalist in 2023.

“This recognition is a testament to the unwavering dedication our staff has to serving the Prince George’s County community with high-quality recreational experiences,” said Bill Tyler, director of M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County. “We are proud to represent our community on a national stage and will continue to pursue greatness in everything we do.”

“Being named a finalist for the National Gold Medal Award is a testament to our dedicated staff, volunteers, and community partners who work tirelessly to provide exceptional parks and programs,” said Miti Figueredo, director of Montgomery Parks. “This recognition reflects our commitment to fostering social connections, encouraging physical activity, and protecting the environment.”

M-NCPPC is competing for the Gold Medal in the Class I category of park systems with a population of more than 400,001. Other park and recreation agencies competing for the Class I Gold Medal include the City of San Antonio Parks and Recreation, Johnson County Park & Recreation District in Shawnee Mission, KS., and Loudoun County Parks, Recreation and Community Services in Leesburg, VA.

Founded in 1965 the Gold Medal Awards program honors communities in the United States that demonstrate excellence in parks and recreation through long-range planning. Resource management, volunteerism, environmental stewardship, program development, professional development, and agency recognition. Agencies are judged on their ability to address the needs of those who they serve through collective energies of community members, staff, and elected officials.

The Gold Medal recipient will be announced in September at the 2025 NRPA Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida.

For the first time in 50 years, fish can swim upstream at the Long Branch crossing of Piney Branch Road.

Fish passageway located under Piney Branch Road in the Long Branch community.

WHEATON, Md. – Montgomery Parks and the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) Purple Line completed a new fish passage project at a stream underpass of Piney Branch Road in the Long Branch community, helping to restore habitat for migratory fish and supporting local aquatic communities. The work was funded as a Purple Line mitigation project and involved installing a new baseflow culvert with specialized “fins” to increase flow depth for fish to swim through.

Fish species that will benefit from this project include the Eastern blacknose dace, creek chub, and white sucker. With additional water quality investments in the watershed, like the recently completed outfall restoration in the upper reaches of the watershed at Indian Spring Terrace Local Park, there is great potential for increasing fish biodiversity along this stretch of Long Branch.

The fish passage culvert project completed by Maryland Transit Solutions, the Purple Line’s design-builder, is part of the Purple Line light rail project’s mitigation efforts. The habitat restoration project supports Montgomery Parks’ ongoing water quality efforts, including promoting the health of the Chesapeake Bay. Long Branch is a major tributary to Sligo Creek, which is a part of the Anacostia Watershed.

“This stream restoration project represents more than just an environmental responsibility—it reflects our community’s deep connection to this stream and our shared commitment to preserving it for future generations,” said Ray Biggs, II senior project director, MTA Purple Line. “We’re proud to be part of a collaborative effort that brings lasting ecological, recreational, and educational value to the area.”

Additional efforts on this project included raising the stream bed and providing channel stability to support improvements to instream habitat and aquatic biodiversity. A healthy ecosystem will sustain a stable fish community and their specialized food sources, even in a highly urbanized watershed such as this.

The department aims to double its solar power production in five years.

WHEATON, MdMontgomery Parks is expanding its solar initiative, with a goal of doubling the park system’s solar energy production over the next five years. The initiative reflects the agency’s commitment to environmental sustainability, operational efficiency, and clean energy leadership in Montgomery County in support of the county’s Climate Action Plan.

Currently, solar installations generate 17% of the energy used across Montgomery Parks—roughly 3.4 million kilowatt-hours annually. Through a strategic combination of rooftop, ground-mounted, and parking canopy solar installations, the department aims to increase that number to nearly 6.8 million kilowatt-hours—the equivalent of energy use for 642 homes for one year.

“Environmental sustainability is at the core of the Parks Department’s mission and is a key pillar of our new general plan, Thrive Montgomery 2050,” said Montgomery Planning Board Chair Artie Harris. “By expanding our solar footprint, we’re cutting carbon emissions, lowering energy costs, and modeling sustainability for the communities we serve.”

Current Successes

Montgomery Parks began leveraging solar energy in 2018 with ground-mounted systems at South Germantown Recreation Park and Rock Creek Regional Park, developed through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Standard Solar. These two sites alone feature nearly 7,500 solar panels, producing 2.5 megawatts of clean power annually—enough to meet the energy needs of 38 park facilities.

In addition, the agency has installed rooftop systems at two maintenance yards, demonstrating how existing infrastructure can serve dual purposes.

“With this initiative, we will show how parks play an important role in reducing carbon emissions and increasing green energy production,” said Montgomery Parks Director Miti Figueredo. “Taking a leadership role in expanding solar in the county is a natural fit for us, and we look forward to announcing some upcoming solar projects in the near future.”

Upcoming solar projects will be supported by a mix of the Parks Department’s capital funding and external incentives, including Federal Investment Tax Credits, Maryland’s Solar Canopy Grant Program, and the Clean Energy for Local Governments Program.

Funding will support improvements for five projects, including the Wheaton Action Sports Park.

WHEATON, Md. —  Montgomery Parks received $5 million in capital funding for five park projects from the state of Maryland during the 2025 legislative session. The department will use the funding to renovate parks and playgrounds in various legislative districts in Montgomery County.

“In a very difficult budget year, the Montgomery County delegation showed its support for parks and came through with funding that will help us deliver and enhance several much-needed projects across the county,” said Miti Figueredo, Montgomery Parks director. “I’m grateful to all the legislators who sponsored bond bills in their districts and would also like to thank Senator Craig Zucker for shepherding the $3 million capital grant for the Wheaton Action Sports Park, which will allow this highly anticipated project to keep moving forward.”

Montgomery Parks relies on additional sources of capital funding, including state and federal grants, to supplement its six-year Capital Improvements Program and keep up with maintenance, repairs, and renovations of an aging park system. State capital grants also help fund new amenities, like the Wheaton Action Sports Park, that serve important recreational needs.

“These grants aren’t a substitute for county bonds, which fund most of our Capital Improvements Program, but in a year when we’ve been asked by the county executive to cut $2 million for Wheaton Regional Park, we are very thankful for the additional funds,” Figueredo added. “We are still hopeful that the county council will restore this $2 million cut so we can keep all our projects on track.”

Capital grant-funded projects for FY26 include:

Wheaton Regional Park$3,000,000 towards the development of the Wheaton Action Sports Park within the Rubini Athletic Complex at Wheaton Regional Park. The Wheaton Action Sports Park is the signature new project recommended in the 2022 Wheaton Regional Park Master Plan, and includes a skatepark, bike skills track, climbing wall, adventure playground, picnic shelters, community track, bathroom, overlook plaza, event seating, lighting, and other features. This project was sponsored by Senator Ben Kramer and Delegates Charlotte A. Crutchfield, Bonnie L. Cullison, and Vaughn M. Stewart III (District 19).

New Hampshire Estates Neighborhood Park – $828,000 towards park redevelopment following impacts from the Maryland Purple Line construction. Ribbon-cutting for the new amenity will take place April 15, 2025, at 10 a.m.

WHEATON, Md. – Montgomery Parks is unveiling an accessible viewing platform at Brookside Gardens, overlooking the Gude Garden, the popular Japanese-style landscape featuring a teahouse, rolling hills, and ponds. The new viewing platform was made possible by a gift from long-time friend and supporter of the gardens, the late Joan O’Rourke, so that guests of all abilities can now experience close-up views of the large pond and picturesque gardens surrounding the Japanese Tea House.

New accessible platform at Gude Garden at Brookside Gardens.

“With the philanthropic support from Mrs. O’Rourke, the Montgomery Parks Foundation was able to contract the work on the viewing platform to ensure it could be made available to the public as soon as possible,” said Katie Rictor, executive director of the Montgomery Parks Foundation. “The Montgomery Parks Foundation partnered with Friends of Brookside Gardens to ensure this needed addition came to life.”

“The accessibility created by this platform and supported by my Aunt Joan has opened the door of opportunity for residents of Montgomery County and surrounding areas to fully enjoy the beauty of Brookside Gardens—the beauty my Aunt Joan found and loved,” said Harriann Walker, Joan O’Rourke’s niece.

Montgomery Parks will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the new inclusive, accessible platform on April 15, 2025, at 10 a.m. All are welcome.

WHAT:             Ribbon-cutting ceremony for new accessible viewing platform at Brookside Gardens (short speaking program, light refreshments)

WHEN:             Tuesday, April 15, 2025, 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.
                          (Rain or shine)

WHERE:         Brookside Gardens, 1800 Glenallan Avenue, Wheaton, Md. 20902

The accessible platform offers expansive views of the large pond in the Gude Garden. Stone walls made from local Carderock boulders level the steep slope along the water’s edge. The terrace is constructed from reclaimed granite and Carderock stones, while the viewing platform features Ipe wood for both the railing and decking.

The Gude Garden is located south of the Brookside Gardens’ Visitor Center. The six-acre landscape was created in 1972. The rolling hills feature a collection of flowering cherry and Japanese maple trees and complement the large ponds, which are home to turtles, toads, fish, and blue herons.

In addition to the new viewing platform, Brookside Gardens offers accessible parking, entrances, pathways, restrooms, and adaptive equipment to encourage people of all abilities to visit and enjoy the gardens. Service animals are welcome, but pets are not allowed.

WHEATON, Md. –Montgomery Parks announces a new, permanent art installation, Synesthesia, located in downtown Silver Spring at Gene Lynch Urban Park. Synesthesia, by Baltimore-based artist Becky Borlan, is a sculpture featuring a series of stainless-steel framed, glass panels that include a graphic film creating a kaleidoscopic colored effect. The panels project from the park’s central pergola structure and feature LED lighting to create a captivating night presence.

“Public art is important for so many reasons – it engages and inspires, creates a sense of place and identity, and supports local artists. We are thrilled with the new installation and hope it will catch the attention of passers-by to stop and enjoy the park,” said Miti Figueredo, director of Montgomery Parks.

Synesthesia was selected as the winning entry for the park’s art installation among more than 100 submissions. An artist selection panel narrowed the submissions down to four finalists. The winner was selected through a public voting process.

Gene Lynch Urban Park is a 0.25-acre triangular park located in downtown Silver Spring, across from the Paul S. Sarbanes Transit Center and Silver Spring Metro Station. The park opened in June 2023 and is dedicated to late Planning Board Commissioner, civic leader, and political activist Gene Lynch.

WHEATON, Md. – As peak cherry blossom season approaches, Montgomery Parks is rolling out an updated online map of cherry trees in parks featuring icons representing different species of cherry trees and their locations. Species growing on parkland include black cherry, Yoshino, Japanese flowering, Higan and Okame cherry trees.

“We want people to realize they don’t necessarily have to drive far to see cherry blossoms,” said Keegan Clifford, Montgomery Parks GIS coordinator. “The flowering cherry trees map may reveal a few trees, or a healthy stand within a short distance of their home.”

Montgomery Parks cherry trees are scattered throughout the county with significant numbers in Brookside Gardens, Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreational Park, and South Germantown Recreational Park.  However, good blossom viewing based on tree density is also available at Kemp Mill Urban Park in Wheaton, Leland Neighborhood Park in Chevy Chase, and Sligo Avenue Neighborhood Park in Silver Spring.

One thing the online map cannot reveal—the cherry trees’ peak bloom time, which is expected in late March or early April.

“Montgomery Parks cherry blossom season is more of a slow rollout rather than a sudden burst of color, due to the presence of several species, which bloom at different times,” said James Polino, Montgomery Parks urban forester. “So, my best advice is regular check-ins on the blossoms in several spots. It’s a good excuse to get out into nature as spring arrives.”

The cherry trees map is one of many features of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission’s Geographic Information System (GIS). The computer-based system analyzes, stores and displays geographic information and presents it in a visual and understandable way.
